Behavioral system is a gene-independent and context-specific component of personality. For example, a child's behavior may reveal different aspects of its personality in contact with peers and in contact with parents. Behavioral system is strongly affected by the extent of the behavioral space, i.e. the space of permissible behaviors. Tight behavioral spaces may lead to behavioral systems that become rigid (high stability).

Behavioral system develops as a result of dynamic social interactions and evolves over time. Stable behavioral system may last a lifetime. In authoritarian parenting, submissive behaviors in a child may be very hard to change in adulthood.
