Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the semi-annual ritual of shifting clocks by one hour forward or back. The alleged benefits are dubious. Global costs of DST are monumental. By some estimates, the increase in heart attacks on the day of the backward shift is 24% (mostly attributed to sleep deprivation). SuperMemo SleepChart has consistently refused to make adjustments for fears of introducing bugs or distortions that would affect circadian measurements. I have consistently refused changing my clocks. It is easier to make a mental calculation of adding one hour in summer. It is particularly easy in that I avoid timed appointments. However, due to my massive use of time-management tools (e.g. Plan) and the reliance on electronic media that apply DST inconsistently, I have lost a huge chunk of my life on cleaning up the mess left in the wake of DST.

In Poland, Wladek Kosiniak-Kamysz was one of the first to show political initiative in abolishing the madness. He is a candidate for president in 2020, and his position speaks well of his rational mind.

In summer 2018, the European Union followed with a public e-vote that showed that vast majority of the participants abhor the concept of DST (5 million, 80% against). By 2021, within the EU, the DST was to be dumped into the dustbin of human overengineering history. Sadly, it is still leeching upon our time and attention.

The world should adopt the UTC. We will only need a bit of adjustment in trying to remember that in America, people like to get up at noon.

Daylight Saving Time is one of the dumbest inventions in human history
