Sleep deficit is a condition that follows insufficient sleep. Sleep deficit is usually caused by sleep deprivation, e.g. caused by shortening sleep with an alarm clock. A more specific REM sleep deficit may occur in situations when sleep is sufficient, but is neurophysiologically unhealthy. For example, drinking alcohol before sleep, abusing cannabis, misuse of melatonin, or sleeping in a wrong phase may result in REM sleep deficit.

When sleep deficit occurs on successive days, it mean lead to sleep debt. Terms sleep debt, sleep deficit and sleep deprivation are often used interchangeably.
