Summerhill School is a pioneer of democratic education. It was established in 1921 by Alexander Neill. The school often had to struggle to preserve its status against various attempts of intervention from the UK government. Sadly, the school is often chosen as the last resort for children who cannot cope in the coercive school system.

Neill's philosophy is described in his book Summerhill.

The character of the school and its battles with supervisory bodies is depicted in the movie Summerhill.
